Q: How much previous experience do I need to have in order to volunteer?
A: We are always looking for professionals with experience, however our work is also enriched by those with enthusiasm and willingness to learn. For more information, refer to specific volunteer positions available.
Q: How much Spanish do I need to know? Do you offer classes?
A: Depending on what projects you would like to be involved in, you may need anywhere from beginning/basic spanish to an advanced level. You will be able to have individual Spanish lessons here in Trujillo with a local teacher for 20 soles per hour. There is also the possibility to arrange "intercambios" with local people who wish to?learn?English,?they will help you learn Spanish in exchange for help with their English.
Q: What is the minimum or maximum amount of time I can volunteer? A: We ask that you stay a minimum of a month. For obvious reasons, the longer you can stay, the better for the project it is because it gives continuity for the children and enables you to really get to know the people we are working with. We tend to find that those who come only for a month leave wishing that they had been able to stay longer. The organisation is also enriched by people who can take time to learn our working processes and develop strategies to improve them.
Q: What do I do for food and other shopping?
A:?SKIP volunteers usually eat lunch together in El Porvenir at Do?a Vicky's house. A complete menu (including vegetarian/vegan) costs 4 soles. The contribution fee will only include accommodation and bills such as electricity. Therefore you will be responsible for all other costs incurred while you are here, food, travel and so on. These things are relatively inexpensive here and as a minimum budget, we would suggest that you can survive on around 500 soles per month. You will need more money if you want to take trips to see tourist attractions and partake in other activities, for example surfing or nights out. Q: What is the dress code for SKIP?
A: SKIP will provide you with a vest to identify you within the community. Even going out in the evenings, people dress very casually. Women must note that tight-fitting clothing may add to unwanted attention, especially in El Porvenir. Dress is very casual even if you are teaching in the schools or working in the SKIP office. T-shirts, light-weight trousers or jeans, hiking boots or sneakers, and a hat for example are worn by many volunteers due to the fact that you will be walking around in the sand in El Porvenir.
Q: What should I bring?
A: You should bring a copy of all your important documents (and these should be kept separate from any original documents). It's advisable to email a copy of this information to yourself as well.
You will be able to buy most things you need here in Trujillo. It is advisable to bring sunscreen with you as it is expensive here and mosquito repellent with a high concentration of Deet may be hard to find. In terms of clothing, in the winter and spring?you will need a jacket for the evenings as it does get cooler at night. We would advise referring to a guide book/internet for clear information on temperatures and climate at different times of the year. Q: Is it safe?
A: This is a somewhat difficult question to answer emphatically. Trujillo is like any other city, there are certain areas where you would be advised to take caution during the day and avoid after dark. You can ask volunteers who have been in Trujillo for a while to find out about the places to avoid. There are thieves and from time to time, people are robbed. We advise using purses with a long strap that you can wear over your body so someone cannot just grab it and run away with it. Don?t draw attention to yourself by wearing expensive jewellery and carry only the money that you need and leave your cash card and ID documents in the house unless you need them. This is particularly important in El Porvenir as it is a poor area and can be more dangerous than where the volunteer house and home stay house are located. It would be sensible to think about the clothing you wear. Huanchaco is a tourist town and you do not really need to think about what you are wearing. However, in El Porvenir in particular, it is not appropriate to wear skirts and we would advise wearing trousers or long shorts. As an extra precaution, we would advise that people try to make sure at least one other person knows where they are going and what they are up to. In this way if you do not return at the specified time, someone will be aware and we can try and get in touch with you, or raise an alarm if you are very late back and we don?t know where you are. We would ask that people remember this system is in place and contact the house, or let someone know if you are going to be late back, so as to avoid unnecessary panic. It is a good idea to stick to licensed taxis, particularly if you are travelling on your own. Q: Do I need health insurance?
A: Travel and health insurance is required (pay particular attention to cover for medical expenses, theft and for sporting activities of your policy choice) for your stay with SKIP. Google can provide some online options, or you inquire at your local travel agencies for policy quotes. Before travelling it is recommended that you have a medical check-up. Ensure you bring any essential medications or vitamins. Be sure to consult your travel doctor for more information. Prescriptions are not needed for many medications in Peru but it?s advisable to bring what you need with you.
Q: Do I need a visa or immunisations?
A: For residents of most countries, you will be able to obtain a tourist?visa for 6 months (183 days) when you get to the airport in Peru. However, it is best to check this information online to make sure that you get up to date information about requirements for passport holders from your country and then follow guidance about how to apply if this is necessary. We are able to?post written confirmation letters out to you if this proves necessary in obtaining the visa. In terms of immunisations, you should seek medical advice from your GP with regard to which they feel are necessary.
Q: How do I get to Trujillo and then to SKIP?
A: If your flight arrives very late in the evening, book a hotel and spend the night in Lima. The easiest way is to book a hotel that offers an airport pick-up. Attempting to negotiate a reasonable price (8-9 soles) and negotiating the swarm of taxi drivers that will envelope you can be overwhelming after a long flight and change of time zones. Contact us and we can offer some recommendations and/or refer to guide books. Bus companies are next door to one another on the same strip in Paseo de la Republica in El Cercado de Lima. To get to the bus companies from the Airport take a taxi. If you have some time to pass before your bus leaves, hang out in Miraflores. Bus companies will let you store luggage with them, but the areas around the bus stations are not very safe. To Miraflores by taxi from the bus lines costs 8-9 Soles. Make sure to take a taxi from inside the bus stations. Some buses are quite comfortable with reclining seats to sleep and go directly to Trujillo. Most buses have very similar schedules for departures to Trujillo in the early morning beginning at 9 am until 1 pm. After this time buses generally do not depart until the evening between 9 and 11 pm. We recommend taking a direct bus (bus directo) if you do not want to worry about your bags during the trip as much. Bus companies include: Linea, Cruz del Sur, Orme?o, Flores, Cial, and Turismo Dias. The bus ride to Trujillo from Lima takes approximately 8 hours and costs 35-70 ($12-$25) soles. From the bus stations to SKIP, depending on what time your bus arrives, a member of the SKIP team can pick you up at the bus station, or you can get to the house on your own if preferred. Taxis should cost 2.50-3.00 soles depending on what time you arrive. Flying to Trujillo from Lima is another option; and the flight takes about an hour. If your international flight arrives early in the morning, you might connect with a domestic flight to Trujillo the same morning. You can book your flight ticket online or buy it at the airport. There are three flights daily to Trujillo from Lima. There is also a departure tax payable for all domestic flights (check with the airport). Lan Peru is known for its delayed departures so when you arrive at the airport contact us if your arrival time changes. Costs are from $60 one-way and up. Check prices online or with travel agents for current prices. Q: Is there a phone at SKIP?
A: Phone calls can be made with a telephone cards from the house. Some volunteers also buy a Peruvian mobile while they are here for approx 60 soles and up and often get deals; e.g. 60 soles worth of credit with a mobile purchase. Of course, there are also the incredible benefits of Skype if you decide to bring a personal laptop during your stay in Trujillo. Incoming calls to cell phones and landlines are free to the receiver in Peru; you may have friends and family call the SKIP house.
Q: Can my family and friends mail me packages?
A: Frequently mail is delayed or may take a few weeks longer than systems in the US or EU. It is strongly advised to never send valuables through the postal service.
Q: What do I do about money?
A: ATMs (cajeros) are available walking distance from the SKIP house and there are many Peruvian and international bank branches in the center (El Centro) of town. We do not recommend using traveller cheques as it does take a long time to change them at the bank.
Q: Where will I live? Where do I work?
A: There are three accommodation options and we are happy for you to stay in your preferred choice as long as there is room. The main volunteer house is in a large, comfortable and secure house in Trujillo. Close by, we are able to offer a home stay option where you will live in the home of a local family. This is in a large house and a number of the rooms are rented out so there may also be other local professionals living there. This housing option may be a preferred choice for those hoping to improve their Spanish skills (there is a bit of a tendency to defer to using English in the volunteer house). In both these housing options there is the possibility that you may need to share a room and so we need people to inform us prior to arrival if this is going to be a problem so we can make arrangements for a private room. Finally, we can also offer accommodation in a house in Huanchaco, the local beach town about a 30 minute micro ride away from the volunteer house. A maximum of three people can stay in this accommodation. Those interested should be warned that travel to the office from here is probably close to an hour, so be prepared for the commute if you choose this option. See accommodation section for more information. SKIP works in El Porvenir, the second largest impoverished district of Trujillo, Peru. We also work in Alto Trujillo, a large planned community above the city that continues to grow as poor families leave rural areas for the city. See where we work section for more information.

P: ¿Cuánto Español necesito saber? ¿Ofrecen clases allá?
R: Dependiendo de los proyectos en los que quieras participar, deberás tener un nivel desde principiante o español básico hasta un nivel avanzado. Tendrás la oportunidad de tener clases individuales de español acá en Trujillo con un profesor local por 20 soles la hora. También existe la posibilidad de organizar intercambios con la gente local que desea aprender inglés. Ellos te ayudarán a aprender español a cambio de que los ayudes con su inglés.
P: ¿Cuál es tiempo mínimo /máximo en el que puedo ser voluntario?
R: Pedimos que te quedes un mínimo de un mes. Por razones obvias, mientras más tiempo puedas quedarte, mejor para el proyecto ya que esto le da continuidad al trabajo con los niños y te permite conocer realmente a las personas con las que estás trabajando. Muy a menudo encontramos voluntarios que vienen solo por un mes, y al momento de partir les dan ganas de haberse quedado más tiempo. La organización también se beneficia de personas que puedan dedicar tiempo a aprender nuestra forma de trabajo y desarrollar estrategias para mejorarla.
P: ¿Qué hay en cuanto a la comida y otras compras?
R: Los voluntarios de SKIP generalmente almuerzan juntos en SKIP, El Porvenir, en la casa de Doña Vicky. Un menú completo (incluyendo menú vegetariano) cuesta 4 soles.
El pago de contribución solo incluye alojamiento y el pago de cuentas como la electricidad. Por lo tanto, tú serás responsable por todos los otros gastos incurridos en tu estadía como comida, viaje, etc. Estas cosas no son muy caras acá, y como presupuesto mínimo, creemos que puedes sobrevivir con alrededor de 500 soles mensuales. Necesitarás más dinero su quieres viajar a ver atracciones turísticas o participar en otras actividades como el surf o salir en la noche.
P: ¿Cuál es la forma de vestir apropiada en SKIP?
R: SKIP te entregará una pechera para identificarte dentro de la comunidad. Incluso cuando la gente sale en las tardes, se visten muy casuales. En el caso de las mujeres, es probable que la ropa muy ajustada provoque demasiada atención, especialmente en El Porvenir. La vestimenta es muy casual, incluso si enseñas en las escuelas o trabajas en la oficina de SKIP. Poleras, pantalones livianos o jeans, bototos o zapatillas y sombrero, por ejemplo, son prendas comunes en muchos de los voluntarios debido a que hay que caminar sobre la arena en El Porvenir.
P: ¿Qué debería llevar?
R: Deberías traer una copia de todos tus documentos importantes (las que deberían ser guardadas separadamente de los originales). Te recomendamos enviar una copia de esta información a tu correo personal.
Podrás comprar la mayoría de las cosas que necesitas en Trujillo. Recomendamos que traigas bloqueador solar ya que es caro y también repelente de mosquitos (DEET), debido a que puede ser difícil encontrarlo.
En cuanto a la ropa, en invierno y primavera necesitarás una chaqueta para las tardes y durante la noche, ya que más tarde se vuelve bastante frío. Puedes visitar un libro turístico o el Internet para información especifica acerca de las temperaturas y clima en diferentes épocas del año.
P: ¿Es seguro?
R: Esta es una pregunta algo difícil de contestar con empatía. Trujillo es como cualquier otra ciudad, hay ciertas áreas donde se recomienda tener cuidado durante el día y evitar cuando esté oscuro. Puedes pedir a los voluntarios que han estado en Trujillo para que te cuenten que lugares es mejor evitar.
Hay algunos ladrones y, de vez en cuando, asaltan a la gente. Recomendamos usar las billeteras con una cuerda larga que puedas usar en tu cuerpo, así no podría venir alguien y solo tirarla y correr con ella. No llames la atención usando joyería cara y lleva solo el dinero que vas a necesitar, deja tu tarjeta de cajero automático y documentos de identificación en la casa, a menos que los necesites. Esto es particularmente importante en El Porvenir pues es un área de bajos recursos y puede ser más peligrosa que donde se localiza la casa de los voluntarios y de las casas para los intercambios.
Sería importante pensar acerca de la ropa que vas a traer. Huanchaco es una ciudad turística y la verdad no necesitas pensar mucho en lo que estás usando. Sin embargo, en El Porvenir particularmente, no es apropiado usar falda y te recomendaríamos usar pantalones o shorts más bien largos.
Como precaución extra, recomendamos que nuestros voluntarios se aseguren de que al menos una persona sepa donde van y lo que hacen. De esta forma, si no regresaras en la fecha especificada, alguien estará alerta y podemos intentar contactarte o iniciar acciones en caso de que estés demasiado retrasado y no sepamos donde estás. Pedimos a los voluntarios recordar este sistema y contactarse con la casa de voluntarios en caso de improvistos, o avisar a alguien si regresarás más tarde para evitar crear pánico innecesariamente. Una buena idea es recordar tomar siempre taxis con licencia, especialmente si viajas solo.
P: ¿Necesito seguro de salud?
R: Se requiere un seguro de viajes y de salud para participar en SKIP (presta especial atención a cuánto cubre de los gastos médicos, robo o actividades deportivas). Google puede mostrarte algunas opciones online, o también puedes averiguar en las agencias de viaje de tu ciudad para cotizar valores. Antes de viajar se recomienda que te hagas un chequeo médico. Asegúrate de que traigas cualquier medicamento o vitaminas que necesites. También, asegúrate de consultar a tu doctor para más información. No se necesita prescripción médica para muchos medicamentos en Perú, pero te recomendamos traer lo que necesitas contigo.
P: ¿Necesito Visa o algún tipo de vacunación?
R: La mayoría de los residentes de los distintos países podrá obtener una visa de turista por 6 meses (180 días) cuando llegue al aeropuerto en Perú. No obstante, es mejor revisar esta información online para asegurarse de que estás al día en cuanto a los requerimientos de las oficinas de pasaporte de tu país y luego, averigua como postular a los diferentes procesos y documentos en caso de ser necesario. Podemos enviar una carta de confirmación si esto ayuda a obtener tu visa.
En cuando a vacunas o algún tipo de inmunización, debes consultar con tu médico de cabecera para que te oriente.
P: ¿Cómo se llega a Trujillo y luego a SKIP?
R: Si tu vuelo llega muy tarde, reserva una habitación de hotel y pasa la noche en Lima. La manera más fácil es reservar en un hotel que ofrezca servicio de transporte desde el aeropuerto. Intentar negociar un precio razonable (8-9 soles) entre la gran cantidad de taxistas que estarán en el lugar puede ser bastante agotador luego de un viaje largo y cambio en la zona horaria. Las compañías de Bus están una al lado de otra en la misma calle en Paseo de la Republica en El Cercado de Lima. Para llegar a las compañías de bus desde el aeropuerto toma un taxi. Si tienes algo de tiempo antes de que parta tu bus, espera en Miraflores. Las líneas de buses te permitirán guardar tu equipaje con ellos, pero las áreas cercanas a la estación de buses no son muy seguras. Llegar a Miraflores en taxi desde donde están las compañías de bus cuesta entre 8-9 Soles. Asegúrate de tomar un taxi desde dentro del Terminal de buses. Algunos buses son muy cómodos con asientos reclinables para dormir y llegan directo a Trujillo. La mayoría de los buses tienen horarios de salida hacia Trujillo desde temprano en la mañana comenzando a las 9 am hasta la 1 pm. Después de este horario, los buses generalmente no salen hasta la noche, entre 9 y 11pm. Te recomendamos tomar un bus directo si no quieres preocuparte mucho de las maletas durante el viaje. Las compañías de bus incluyen: Linea, Cruz del Sur, Ormeño, Flores, Cial, y Turismo Días. El viaje a Trujillo desde Lima toma aproximadamente 8 horas y tiene un valor de entre 35 a 70 ($12-$25) soles.

Lan Perú es reconocido por sus retrasos en las salidas, por lo que cuando llegues al aeropuerto contáctanos si tu horario de llegada cambia. El valor del ticket de ida va desde los $60. Revisa los precios online o con agencies de viajes para confirmar calores actuales.
P: ¿Hay teléfono en SKIP?
R: Se pueden hacer llamadas con tarjetas telefónicas desde la casa. Algunos voluntarios también compran un teléfono celular peruano mientras están aquí, el que cuesta desde 60 soles aproximadamente y que generalmente trae promociones. Por ejemplo, 60 soles de saldo por la compra del teléfono celular. Por supuesto, también están los increíbles beneficios de Skype si decides traer tu computadora personal durante tu estadía en Trujillo. Las llamadas entrantes a teléfonos celulares y red fija son gratis para quien las recibe en Perú, por lo que tu familia y amigos pueden llamarte a la casa de SKIP.
P: ¿Pueden mi familia y amigos enviarme paquetes por correo?
R: Frecuentemente el correo se retrasa o puede tomar algunas pocas semanas más que el sistema en los Estados Unidos o en la Unión Europea. Se recomienda especialmente no enviar objetos de valor por servicio postal.
P: ¿Que hay en cuánto al dinero?
R: Hay cajeros automáticos disponibles a que se puede caminar perfectamente desde la casa SKIP. También hay muchos bancos peruanos e internacionales en el centro de la ciudad. No recomendamos usar cheques de viajero, ya que toma mucho tiempo cambiarlos en el banco.
P: ¿Dónde viviré? ¿Dónde voy a trabajar?
R: Hay tres opciones de alojamiento y estaremos encantados de ofrecerte la que tu escojas siempre y cuando haya una habitación disponible. La casa principal de voluntarios, ubicada en Trujillo, es grande, cómoda y segura.
Muy cerca de ahí, ofrecemos la opción de que vivas con una familia local. Esta es una casa grande y algunas habitaciones son rentadas, por lo que puede haber otros profesionales locales viviendo ahí. Se recomienda esta opción de alojamiento especialmente a aquellos que quieran mejorar sus destrezas en el uso de español (existe la tendencia de comunicarse en inglés en la casa principal de voluntarios).
En ambas opciones de alojamiento existe la posibilidad de que tengas que compartir una habitación. Necesitamos que nos informes antes de tu llegada si esto es un problema para ti, para poder hacer los arreglos necesarios y que tengas una habitación privada.
Finalmente, podemos ofrecer alojamiento en una casa en Huanchaco, la playa local, que queda aproximadamente a 30 minutos en micro desde la casa de los voluntarios. Un máximo de tres personas pueden quedarse en este lugar. Los interesados deben tomar en cuenta que el viaje a la oficina desde aquí toma cerca de una hora, así que si escoges esta opción, debes prepárate para este tiempo de traslado.
