Children in Peru

Introduction to SKIP

SKIP is an NGO working in an impoverished district of Trujillo, Peru. Our diverse team is comprised of teachers, social workers, psychologists, economic development workers and a range of other volunteers. We provide school fees, uniforms and materials to over 400 children each year. In addition, we provide lessons to reinforce what they are learning in school and help with homework.

SKIP does not just provide direct educational support to children. Our team also work to educate and empower parents so they are able to take control of their lives and improve their own living circumstances. Through the Economic Development Team, we offer microfinance loans, group business training and are in the process of developing several small business ideas with groups of parents.

Social Work and Psychological support also helps parents to deal with difficult issues and gain better understanding for how to manage their children's behaviour. This includes innovative projects where we involve the parents as teaching assistants in the educational groups we have for the children in both primary and nursery.

Education is the key to the future

Unlike public education systems in Western countries, those in Peru are not free, and many families cannot afford their costs. For many uneducated parents, the difference that an education can make in their children's futures remains unrealized.

In addition, a wide range of social problems, from family violence to drug dependency, directly influence a child's academic success.

Quality education is an important and sustainable factor in development

This is why we are working to address these issues and to put quality education at the forefront. Volunteer with us to help make a difference in the lives of these children.

SKIP 2009 Annual Report
Thursday, 27 May 2010 16:27
We have been working in El Porvenir for over six years and have seen the service we provide develop and grow.  Because of this growth, we feel that it is time we produce an annual report to provide interested readers with clear information about what we are doing and our successes and, inevitably, failures — well, let’s call them challenging learning opportunities.  Read the Annual Report by clicking here.

Mother's Day at SKIP
Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:37

In Peru, they take mother’s day very seriously.  The festivities can be seen throughout Trujillo well before Mother’s Day has actually arrived.  SKIP organized our own Mother’s Day party, where we prepared games such as musical chairs, three legged racing and volleyball.  We also brought in hairdressers so the SKIP mothers could go home with a brand new hairdo!  Whilst this was taking place, we entertained the kids by playing with them in the playground and swimming pool.  It’s rare that the children have an opportunity to swim, consequently many of the kids do not know how to.  Our volunteers helped the children build up a little more confidence in the water by handing out floats and swimming alongside them.  Amusingly, however, many children opted for sitting on the volunteer’s shoulders and being given a ride to the other side of the pool!  We finished off the day with cake, crisps, Inca Cola (a bright yellow fizzy drink that resembles the taste of chewing gum, very popular in Peru) and music.  Over all, it was an exceptionally fun day for all; we hope especially for the mums!
