volunteering conditions & contribution
All our volunteers are expected to be dedicated and to work hard in their placements. You will have free time after working hours to use as you wish and will have Saturday afternoons and Sundays free to relax, go to the beach or visit tourist attractions.

We ask for a contribution of $250 US dollars per month during your stay. Alternatively, prospective volunteers are invited to recruit at least five new sponsors (Amigos de SKIP) in lieu of the contribution in Trujillo. Contact SKIP for details. All donations directly fund the project. The most important factor to achieving something really significant in El Porvenir is the team. Once you are here, you will be able to see how your money is spent. Those who are able often donate more when they see what we can achieve with their support. Our volunteers are expected to cover all their own costs: transportation, accommodation and food.

where we work
SKIP is working in El Porvenir, the second largest impoverished district of Trujillo, Peru. We also work in Alto Trujillo, a large planned community above the city that continues to grow as poor families leave rural areas for the city.

El Porvenir has existed for about 50 years. Even though the area still exhibits lots of signs of poverty, the first constructions now have all basic services and paved roads. Outside of this area, the environment becomes progressively poorer. In the arid hills, residents construct makeshift houses, and the majority of roads are unpaved and uneven. Alto Trujillo’s environment can best be described as developing: it lacks running water, sewage systems and rubbish collection. The edge of Alto Trujillo is a desert, but the population increases as people continue to build.

accommodation

We offer accommodation to our volunteers in a large, comfortable and secure house in Trujillo. To get to the city centre, you can either walk 20 minutes, take a taxi ($0,80 US / 2.50 soles) or use public transport (cheaper). Click here to visit!
The rent includes:

  • a furnished room ($90 to $180 US, depending if it's shared or private)
  • hot shower (rare in Peru!)
  • kitchen
  • high-speed wireless Internet access throughout the house
  • weekly clean-up (giving employment to someone from El Porvenir)
  • all utilities
