Your
job You will teach English to 4th,
5th and 6th graders in several schools to prepare them for secondary
school, when they will formally learn the language. We need volunteers to
expand the classes to more children in even more schools, and further
reduce the size of classes. You might also give lessons to some of the
teachers so they can continue after you leave. Spanish and teaching
experience would be useful, but it is not essential. However, if you give
one-to-one classes to some children who have more problems and little
support at home, Spanish is essential.
Typical day In one school where our
volunteers teach in El Porvenir, there are three classes every morning,
from 9:15 am to noon. A fourth class is held on Mondays and Fridays. Each
class is 45 minutes long and is comprised of about 20 children who see the
teachers once a week. The curriculum is provided by SKIP, but your
suggestions are welcomed. For lunchtime, you are free to join the other
volunteers for a meal in the community. Afternoons can either be free or
be spent on an extra project. Some of our teachers like to join the
afternoon tutoring sessions for children who need help with their
homework. Others are currently giving a hand with coordinating tasks.
