''When i first heard about the work Supporting Kids in Peru (SKIP) did from an old friend of mine whose son was completing the 3 peaks challenge to raise funds for them, i thought i would find out more. SKIP is a small charity registered with the UK Charity Commission since 2003 and  adopts a holistic approach to providing disadvantaged Peruvian children with their right to an education, from which poverty would otherwise  exclude them. They believe in a 'hand-up' rather than a 'hand-out' approach  working with the population in order to inspire and teach the family as a unit  to work towards the future, taking responsibility for its own development  thereby reducing child labor and giving poor children the opportunity for a  better, self-sufficient future. The success they achieve is down to the hard work of many volunteers and I believe they really make a difference and felt i would like to support their  on-going work. ''

"I am an "absentee Peruvian" having lived nearly all my life abroad. I
have travelled back regularly over the years, but more so recently as I
think Peru as a country, as an identity and as a people has huge amount
to offer for all of its very many faults.

There is no such thing as a quick fix to deal with the socio-economic
stress that runs deep through Peru's economy and infrastructure. One
thing is for sure, though...If Peru and the Peruvians in it are going to
step forward to take their rightful place at the table of world driving
nations we need to be strong, resolute, focused and determined. We can
only be this as a people if we are educated. Educated enough to believe
in ourselves, educated enough to understand concepts of self worth,
integrity, honesty, loyalty of oneself, ones family and as a proud
people.

I was looking to find some focus in my own life. In December last year a
colleague mentioned a bicycle marathon for amateurs which is part of the
famous Tour de France which takes place in July. I bought a bike and
started training. I then went to an excellent Charity Website on the
internet called "Just Giving" and was fortunate enough to find SKIP on
the site. I decided to do my small part by raising money for a group of
people selflessly dedicated to "Educating Peru" at a grass roots level.

At first glance the SKIP looked just what I was looking for. The more I
read the more impressed I became as to their professionalism,
understanding and sensitivity of issues swirling around the application
of a simple focus: to help the most deprived Peruvian help themselves by
educating them out of their current situation.

But what I missed on the website is what I encountered when I visited
Trujillo in March this year. I was moved, I was touched to my soul by
many things. Two things I will share. This charity is a wonderful
sanctuary from the harsh realities of the outside world for many many
children and mothers. The children are beautiful bundles of
(mischievous) fun keen to learn, their parents are old and weather
beaten, you have to wonder what they live through for the effect of such
a savage change.

There should be a SKIP in every city, town and major village of Peru.
Its good to dream..."
