volunteering positions

economic development monitors & advisors

Your job

The economic development team is dedicated to improving the economic situation of our families. You will be involved in planning projects, selecting families, facilitating training sessions, administrating micro-credits and production processes, monitoring development and consulting to expand the enterprises. Spanish is required as you will be in constant communication with the families and the team. It is also preferable to work with us for a considerable length of time (at least 4 months).

Typical day
In the morning, most women are busy looking after kids, going to the market and cooking lunch, the main meal of the day. On your way to the office, you might pass by some families for a visit. The office for economic development is open from 11 am to 12:30 pm. At that time, mothers come to pick up their children who beneficiate from tutoring, and might want information or pay their loan.

You are also at the office during the first hour after lunch, when more mothers come by to drop off their kids or attend a workshop. Your presence is important: it makes it easier for them to find you. Then, you will make one or two visits to ensure a follow up. This is more a social task and people usualy tell you what keeps them busy and how they are doing without you asking questions. These visits are your chance to build bridges with the families: you show interest in what people are doing and you give them a chance to talk about any problem.

Administration is done at the volunteers' house in the morning or evening. During the weeks when SKIP's entrepreneurs are making school uniforms, shoes and Christmas breads, you are also in charge of coordinating the production and buying materials. This means going regularly to the markets and running around to solve problems that always pop up.
